Der Begriff Ambient bezeichnet ein Musikgenre, bei der sanfte, sphärische Klänge dominieren. Oftmals auch als Easy Listening oder New Age bezeichnet, dient Ambient in erster Linie als Hintergrundmusik, bei der vom Zuhörer kaum Aufmerksamkeit gefordert wird. Meistens werden diese Klangkulissen elektronisch erzeugt und manchmal auch mit Naturgeräuschen und/oder Elementen der Weltmusik gemischt. Ambient eignet sich somit besonders gut zur Erzeugung einer entspannten Atmosphäre oder als Untermalung von Wahrnehmungs- oder Lebensräumen und wird daher oft auch abwertend als Kaufhaus- oder Fahrstuhlmusik bezeichnet.
